Rethinking Prevention Before Winter Hits

Rethinking Prevention Before Winter Hits

The old saying about an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure gets tested every year when cold weather arrives. With El Nino conditions in the forecast, homeowners have good reason to prepare early rather than scramble once the first storm hits. Battening down the hatches is not just a figure of speech. It is a practical checklist that can save money, time, and a lot of stress.

Start with the basics outside. Clear gutters and downspouts so melting snow and heavy rain have somewhere to go. Check the roof for loose shingles or small leaks that could grow into major damage under sustained moisture. Seal gaps around windows and doors to keep drafts out and heating bills down. Insulate exposed pipes, especially in basements, crawl spaces, and garages, so a hard freeze does not turn into a burst pipe emergency.

Inside the house, have the furnace or heating system inspected before the first cold snap. Replace filters and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Stock a few essentials such as salt, a snow shovel, flashlights, and extra batteries. Trim tree branches that hang near the roof or power lines, since ice and wind can bring them down.

None of these tasks takes much effort on its own. Together they form a buffer against the kind of damage that costs far more to fix than to prevent. A little attention now goes a long way when the weather turns.
